Cricket 101, Episode 3 – The Cover Drive

It’s time to make a comparison with ice hockey for this most glorious of cricket strokes, the cover drive. While cricket is often compared to baseball for its style of play, many shots in cricket more closely resemble those from ice hockey and none moreso than the cover drive. Take a look at this video and you’ll see why.

The cover drive gets its name because it’s a shot that is played through the off side of the field into a diagonal region of territory, relative to the batsman’s stance (left handed or right handed), known as the covers.

Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar shows off his cover drive here.

Pavel Bure, one of my all-time favorites, cranks up the speed on the slap shot here.

Thanks again to Gokul Chakravarthy for demonstrating the cover drive. The “Front Foot” radio show on EBC Radio and www.ebcmusic.com every Saturday from 3-4 PM ET in New Jersey is also available for free podcast download on iTunes by searching “Dreamcricket” or “Frontfoot.”

  1. Hey Peter,

    Nice video….enjoyed watching it…:-)

    • Thanks Sangeetha. What’d you think of the special guest star? ;-)

  2. nice comparison.. the audio was poor, though..

    • Yeah that’s a problem. The speaker is on the camera. So you’ll notice if we turn away from the camera to talk, or we are far away the voices get muffled. Kind of hard to fix.

  3. I’ve been using a Flip Mino Video Camera. It’s tiny, fits in the palm of your hand and is very easy to use. You can look them up at http://www.theflip.com. They are starting to advertise a little more now and the brand is growing.
